keep the fun going all season long...safely!
Summer is all about sunshine, playtime, and making happy memories outdoors. But with warmer weather and more time outside, it is also important to stay mindful of safety. Whether you are heading to the park, pool, or just enjoying your own backyard, a few simple precautions can go a long way in keeping your child safe and smiling all summer long.
Sun Protection Is A Must
Young skin is especially sensitive to the sun. Before heading outside, apply a child-safe sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. It is important to apply sunscreen every time you are outside, even on cloudy days. Reapply every two hours, or after swimming or sweating. Don't forget to seek shade when you can. Use hats, sunglasses, and lightweight, long-sleeved clothing for extra protection. See our sunscreen blog for more information.
Stay Cool And Hydrated
Little ones can overheat quickly. Keep water handy and encourage your child to drink often, especially when playing in the sun. Try to plan outdoor activities for cooler times of day, such as the early morning or late afternoon.
Water Safety
Never leave young children unattended near water, even shallow kiddie pools. Make sure an adult is always within arm’s reach. For more information, please see our water safety blog.
Insect Protection Without The Fuss
Mosquitoes and ticks love summer too. Use a child-safe insect repellent (check the label for age recommendations). Dress your child in light-colored clothing to help spot any bugs. After time in grassy or wooded areas, do a tick check, especially around the hairline, ears, and waistline.
Safe Play And Supervision
Keep a close eye on your child when using playground equipment, riding bikes, or climbing. Make sure helmets fit properly. Check that slides and swings are not too hot from the sun. Always supervise near roads, even if it is just for a quick scooter ride.
Car Safety In The Heat
Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle, even for a minute. Cars can heat up quickly and become dangerously hot. Before strapping your child into their seat, check buckles and seats for hot surfaces that could burn delicate skin.
Teach Safety Through Play
Summer is a great time to talk about safety in fun, age-appropriate ways. Use storybooks, songs, or role-playing games to help your child understand rules like “Stay where I can see you,” or “Ask before touching.” When kids feel included and prepared, they are more likely to make safe choices.
Final Thoughts
Summer is a time to enjoy being outside. By planning ahead and staying aware, you are giving your child the freedom to play and grow, while still keeping them protected.
