Vacations with kids can be magical! But let’s be real: traveling with children can also be chaotic, tiring, and full of unexpected challenges. The key to a successful family trip is preparation, flexibility, and a good dose of humor.

Here’s how to make your next vacation truly memorable - and help your children shine every step of the way.

1. Plan With Kids In Mind (And Involve Them!)

Children thrive on routine and predictability. Travel, with its unfamiliar places, food, and schedules, can be overwhelming. Involving kids in the planning process gives them a sense of control and builds excitement.

Tips:

  • Let them choose a few activities or places to visit.

  • Show them pictures or videos of your destination beforehand.

  • Pack together and talk about what to expect.

2. Pack Smart - Not Just More

Packing for kids does not mean bringing the entire toy chest. Focus on essentials that support comfort, safety, and fun.

Packing Tips:

  • Healthy snacks and refillable water bottles.

  • Comfort items (favorite blanket or stuffed animal).

  • Quiet-time activities (books, coloring, small toys).

  • Weather-appropriate clothing and extras for accidents.

  • Travel documents, medications, and basic first aid supplies.

  • Keep a small “survival kit” in your carry-on: wipes, sanitizer, tissues, a change of clothes, and a special surprise toy.

3. Keep Travel Days Child-Friendly

Long flights, road trips, or train rides are tough on little ones. Break up the time and create structure to help kids stay calm and engaged.

Ideas:

  • Create a travel-time schedule (ie - snack time, rest time).

  • Play interactive games such as “I Spy,” travel bingo, or storytelling games to pass the time.

  • Plan regular breaks if driving and look for playgrounds or rest stops with space to move.

4. Stick To A Flexible Routine

Kids are comforted by structure, even on vacation. Try to maintain a familiar rhythm for meals, naps, and bedtime. However, be ready to adapt when needed.

Tips:

  • Bring along a small night light or sound machine to help with unfamiliar sleep environments.

  • Try to keep their bedtime routine similar to at home with their favorite bedtime stories, pajamas and stuffed animals.

  • Do not overpack the schedule. Some quiet time or downtime is just as valuable as sightseeing.

5. Make Memories, Not Just Plans

Some of the best vacation moments are unplanned: an impromptu dance on a boardwalk, spotting a lizard on a hike, or getting caught in the rain. Stay open to surprises and cherish the moments with your child. Your presence is what makes the experience special for your child.

Let Kids Shine With The Following:

  • Give them a travel journal or disposable camera.

  • Let them tell others about their favorite moments.

  • Encourage curiosity and questions, and experience new places together.

6. Be Patient - With Them And Yourself

There will be meltdowns. There will be delays. But there will also be joy, laughter, and connection. Traveling with kids is less about checking off attractions and more about creating shared experiences.

Final Thoughts

Traveling with children takes effort, but the payoff is priceless. With the right mindset and some thoughtful preparation, your vacation can be an adventure where your children can learn and shine. And where you build lasting memories together!
