Fireworks are a beloved part of July 4th celebrations. But, they are also a leading cause of holiday injuries. In 2023, there were nearly 10,000 injuries related to fireworks. Even small fireworks like sparklers can pose serious hazards, especially to children. Here’s how to enjoy the holiday while keeping little ones safe:
Attend A Professional Show
The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to leave it to the pros.
Arrive early to find a spot away from traffic and where the fireworks are launched. The AAP recommends enjoying them at least 500 feet away to avoid injuries and protect hearing.
Bring ear protection for young children, such as foam earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones. Fireworks can reach up to 150-175 decibels, far above the safe level of 70-80 decibels.
Pack essentials: Blankets, water, snacks, bug repellant, and glow sticks for fun without fire.
Avoid Sparklers
Sparklers may seem harmless, but it’s important to know the risks:
Sparklers burn at about 2,000°F - hot enough to melt some metals and cause 3rd degree burns.
Nearly half of firework injuries in young children (under 5) are related to sparklers.
Most common sites of injuries include the hands, face, ears and eyes.
Safer Alternatives For Kids
You can still create 4th of July magic with the following child-safe activities:
Glow sticks and LED wands are fun and colorful for kids of all ages.
Bubbles or confetti poppers are a joyful way to celebrate.
Patriotic crafts let kids help decorate for the holiday with red, white, and blue flair.
Stream a virtual fireworks show safely from home.
Final Thoughts
By choosing safer options and planning ahead, you can help your children experience the joy of the 4th, without the risks.
