Summer is the perfect time for kids to move their bodies. Movement supports not only physical health, but also mood, focus, and sleep.

Did you know that regular movement can help kids feel less anxious or sad? A new study in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry shows that exercise is a powerful way to boost mental health in children and teens. Lots of kids struggle with big feelings, and exercise is a great option to help them!

Here are 5 ways to keep your kids active this summer:

1. Go On A Scavenger Hunt

Make a list of things to find outside such as a bird or a flower and let the adventure begin! Walking and exploring are great for both bodies and brains.

2. Ride Bikes, Skates, Or Scooters

Whether it’s around the block or at a local park, these activities help with balance and coordination. Don’t forget the safety gear such as helmets and pads!

3. Host A Dance Party

Crank up your child’s favorite music and let loose in the living room. Add freeze dance or follow-the-leader to keep things exciting.

4. Try A New Hiking Trail

Local hikes or nature walks are a great way to explore and move at the same time. Bring a bug jar and binoculars to turn it into a nature mission. Don’t forget the bug spray and to check for ticks when you are finished!

5. Play Backyard Games

Classic games like tag, hopscotch, capture the flag, and hide-and-seek never go out of style.

Final Thoughts:

Make movement fun for the whole family!  When kids see you enjoying movement, they’re more likely to join in.
