In the Shine At The Doctor series, our goal is to put your child at ease by turning doctor visits into fun adventures. Below are seven healthy habits you can practice with your child. Hover over each

Distract

Shift your child’s attention away from an unpleasant experience.

Reframe

Redirect negative thoughts. Encourage your child to see the situation in a positive

light.

Validate

Acknowledge your child’s emotions. Help them understand and express their feelings.

Imagine

Ask your child to think of a happy place. Help them create a detailed picture in their mind. Use all the senses to make the scene come alive.

Support

Provide comfort and encouragement to your child, especially during scary situations.

Imitate

Take your child through the steps of what to expect. First, demonstrate on a toy or yourself.  Next, have your child practice on the same toy…or you!

Teach

Build on Lumie’s foundation of healthy habits. Turn daily interactions into teachable moments.

Have Fun With stickers

Team Shine uses sticker charts as a positive reward to reinforce desired behaviors. Distract your child with a fun game: collect as many stickers as possible for completing different tasks at the doctor.

After earning all their stickers at the end of the visit, offer your child a healthy larger prize, such as special time with you doing favorite activities. Whatever the prize, make sure to offer lots of verbal praise too!

support & shine

Your support means the world to your child, especially during situations that feel unfamiliar or scary. When you offer calm reassurance, you build connection and help your child feel secure.

Children often mirror the energy of the adults around them. When you stay calm and grounded, your child is more likely to do the same. Grow your team! A favorite stuffed animal can serve as a support toy to help your child feel at ease. Trusted role models, like teachers, coaches, or extended family members, can also play a meaningful role in offering emotional support.

Practice makes perfect

Use imitative play to help your child know what to expect and alleviate any fears. Encourage your child to play doctor at home with their favorite stuffed animal or you! Guiding your child through the steps of a doctor visit reduces their fear of the unknown and helps them feel more comfortable.

Embrace Teachable Moments

Everyday moments offer opportunities to teach your child. Use these interactions to build a strong foundation for lifelong healthy choices.

partner with your child

Be part of the team too! Join in on the visit. Make it playful - have some fun!

When possible, allow your child to choose between two acceptable options to give them an active role during the visit.

Advocate for your child. If you know something works to distract them, kindly ask for it. Supporting your child not only helps them in the moment but also teaches them to confidently ask for what they need.
